Speaking
about Carlo Trost means speaking about wood, about nature, about a love
and a deep bond that links the artist from Udine to the roots of life
itself. Because wood is supple living matter, and it can be used to
create a work of art only if you know it well, if you respect it, if
you observe it in all its nuances, if you can appreciate it when
touching it, and if you can transfer all these sensations with
sensitivity and a deep knowledge of how to work with it. Observing
nature offers Trost an endless series of cues; when projecting his
works he is inspired by what is around him. Hence his paintings with
leaves, the forms which reproduce the waves of the sea, the fish, the
sculptures inspired by plants or the totem with flowers, the
polychromatic stones or the stones which become lapis lazuli. All these
works are inspired by simple poor elements, but Trost transforms them
with ability and passion into more complex structures, which have the
merit of maintaining a unique terseness and synthesis. |

These results
are obtained
through a continuous work of analysis, of composition and dissection,
with constant research into new materials, suitable for the result
which the artist wants to obtain: polychromatic pressed wood works
which are enhanced in very carefully studied mixes, because nothing is
left to chance or improvisation. All this is the fruit of the utmost
precision in the cutting of the woods and in the assemblage of the
basic elements. Once completed, Trost’s works not only have a
remarkable visual impact which changes, thanks to the way in which they
are devised and “made”, according to the perspective from which they
are observed, changing colour and shape because of the
tridimensionality with which they are composed, but they also invite to
be appreciated through tactile contact. Because the wood is finely
polished and offers a sensation of smoothness which induces the
observers to touch the works with their hands. |

But
speaking about Trost also means speaking about his small workshop where
he moves with ease between the wood working machinery, alternating
their usage with that of glues, paints, polishers, flex. His workshop
is also a meeting place for the friends who wish to talk with Carlo
while he works or while he has a break, and they are assured of being
always welcomed with affection and friendship, which are the most
appreciated human qualities of the artist from Udine. He is always
ready to speak about his job, his projects, his ideas and programmes
with a simplicity which has no secrets. I myself was impressed by the
disarming way in which he talked about his experiences, by the
sometimes “sly” look of one who, knowing deeply the environment and the
nature that surrounds him, is not too surprised by the changes of
things. Because after all his certainties are deep rooted, apparently
simple as well as extremely complex, but always ready to transform into
a new reality and a new work of art.
